Live data

Aircraft positions — adsb.lol

Live ADS-B aircraft positions are provided by adsb.lol. adsb.lol data is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0. Contains information from adsb.lol, which is made available under the ODbL.

Flight routes — adsb.lol standing data

When an aircraft is selected, its origin and destination airports are looked up from adsb.lol's static route dataset (vrs-standing-data.adsb.lol). The lookup is keyed on the public callsign only and carries no location data. Same operator and same ODbL terms as the live position feed above; routed through the same caching proxy.

Geocoding & place names — OpenStreetMap / Nominatim

Location names are resolved using the Nominatim service, which is built on OpenStreetMap data.

OVERHEAD respects the Nominatim usage policy: requests are coordinate-rounded client-side (~110 m), debounced (place search is sent only when you pause typing, with a 3-character minimum), edge-cached, sent with an identifying User-Agent, and routed through OVERHEAD's own caching proxy. There is no direct fallback — Nominatim is never contacted straight from a visitor's browser.

ISS position — wheretheiss.at

Live International Space Station position is provided by wheretheiss.at, a free public API, routed through OVERHEAD's caching proxy (short cache TTL) like the aircraft and geocoding feeds. As with every upstream, there is no direct fallback.

Astronomical methods

Planetary positions are computed from mean Keplerian orbital elements (solving Kepler's equation for each planet and for Earth, then taking the geocentric difference) — a low-precision method accurate to roughly 1°, suitable for a naked-eye ceiling view rather than precise ephemeris work.
Sidereal time, solar position, lunar phase and rise/set geometry use standard published astronomical algorithms (truncated Meeus).
Named-star and constellation geometry derive from standard public-domain bright-star catalogue data.

Fonts (self-hosted)

Both fonts are licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1 (scripts.sil.org/OFL) and are served locally from /fonts — no third-party font CDN is contacted.

OVERHEAD's own code is © 2026 Jash Patel and licensed under the GNU AGPL-3.0, with a separate commercial licence available for proprietary use (see LICENSE.txt). The third-party components credited above remain under their respective licences.
